Using the Restatements of the Law

This lesson is intended as an introduction to the use of the Restatements of the Law. In this lesson students will learn what the Restatements of the Law are and why one would use them for legal research, their major features, how to search them, and how to use them to find cases.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the lesson, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain what the Restatements of the Law are and why you would want to use them for legal research.
  2. Describe the major features of the Restatements, including rules, comments, illustrations, and appendices.
  3. Apply methods to search the Restatements by subject, both in print and online.
  4. Use the Restatements to find cases.
